Famous around the world for its catastrophic demise in ancient times, the ruins of Pompeii is a wondrous sight to see! A once thriving city struck down by the powerful volcanic eruption of  Mount Vesuvius. Despite its tragic end in 79 A.D., the area remains one of the popular tourist destinations in all of Italy, being a hub for ancient artefacts and incredible stories. Even if you aren’t the biggest history buff around, we guarantee you’ll enjoy these five key reasons to visit Pompeii.

1. It’s like time travelling

The 79 A.D. volcanic eruption buried the city under a thick layer of ash and dirt. The layer slowly hardened and became a blanket to hide the city from the world, with centuries passing before anyone re-discovered the buried kingdom. Because of this, the ruins are like a snapshot of time, with buildings still standing, artefacts remaining, and even skeletons of the citizens scattered about. Strolling through museums and watching documentaries are all well and good. But walking down the actual ancient streets of Pompeii lets you take a step back in time, visulising the life these ancient citizens lived without any trouble.

2. Home to the Oldest Amphitheatre

Amphitheatres are one of the greatest parts of Ancient Rome’s history. With famous games such as the gladiator fights or chariot racing held in these extraordinary stadiums. Pompeii’s amphitheatre although isn’t as grand as Rome’s famous Colosseum, is listed as the oldest roman amphitheatre still existing. Built-in 80 B.C., it was the very first known amphitheatre made of stone, instead of wood. Take a seat and be transported back to the ancient times as you marvel at the impressive and grandiose construction.

3. Its Stunning Treasures Inside the Brothels

Interested in a more tantalising venture? Pompeii is filled with enticing secrets that showcase the citizens habitually indulgences in the pleasures of the flesh. The ancient brothels are one of the best sites for this, with an endless amount of brothel rooms leftover in the central streets. The wealthy men of Pompeii visited these brothels frequently, with luxurious decorations and intimate rooms welcoming them in. Undoubtedly the best part of these brothels are the frescoes still displayed today, showcasing the different services available. Despite the stunning decorations of the brothel’s interior, the reality of the workers is quite tragic. Learn more about this when you take a tour throughout the brothels. Sightseeing Tours Italy’s Pompeii Tour from Rome, which had not just the brothels, but all the city’s greatest attractions.

4.The Spectacular Public Baths

Bathing back in ancient Roman times was very different from today’s activities. Instead of it being a private activity like nowadays, it was seen as a social occasion and a big part of the city’s culture and society. Most citizens didn’t have their own private bathrooms, so instead went to the Public Baths of Pompeii every afternoon. Here they would bath freely, meeting up with friends, gossiping, or simply relaxing after a days work. The baths themselves were stunning creations, with multiple rooms, brilliant decoration, and even courtyards for a relaxing walk afterwards. Visit these deserted baths today and see the crumpling decorations sprinkling the walls, ceilings, and even the bath bottoms.

5. Mount Vesuvius

The reason for this ancient city’s demise; Mount Vesuvius. The massive volcano standing just a short way away, casting a shadow on the remains of Pompeii. The massive volcano was a mystery to the citizens of Pompeii, as back then there wasn’t even a word for volcano. The eruption came as a complete surprise for the city, with around 20,000 people not able to escape the destruction in time. The volcano is still active today and could easily destroy the region again. However, scientists regularly monitor the volcano, so it is perfectly safe to visit during your stay.
